The Affordable Care Act is the most sweeping change to the healthcare landscape since the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid half a century earlier. As Illinois launched its insurance marketplace, it was essential that accurate data in accessible, meaningful formats was available to policymakers and those helping residents get covered. Data Matters was created to help ensure that nonpartisan, trusted healthcare delivery and health reform information on Illinois and the Chicago metropolitan area were available to all.
Prior to the ACA, nearly 1 out of every 7 working age adults in Illinois lacked health insurance. The maps and visualizations at Data Matters showed where these residents were and whether they were eligible for the marketplace or Medicaid. As residents gained coverage, it was clear that Medicaid expansion was by far the largest driver, with a doubling of working-age adults covered by the program.
Data Matters, part of our Illinois Health Matters initiative, built upon our earlier Visualizing Health Care Reform project.
